Ambassador Aminu Bags National Honour

Nigeria's Ambassador to the United States, Professor Jibril Aminu was among two hundred and fifteen (215) Nigerians and foreigners alike recently conferred with different categories of Nigerian national honours award. Ambassador Aminu was conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

The National honours award is Nigeria's highest acknowledgement of the contribution of individuals to the socio-economic development of the country.

Ambassador Aminu a Physician and Professor of Medicine specializing in cardiology and hypertension was born in Song, Adamawa State of Nigeria in 1939.

He had his secondary school education at Middle School Yola (Adamawa State) and Government (now Barewa) College Zaria after which he passed both his West African School Certificate (WASC,) and General Certificate of Education (GCE) advanced level with distinctions.

He had his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in medicine at University of Ibadan Nigeria (then College of the University of London) and Middlesex Hospital, Royal London Hospital and Royal Post-graduate medical school all in London respectively. A fellow of the Nigerian Postgraduate Medical College (FMCP), Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP), Mathematical Association of Nigeria, African Academy of Science, Nigeria Academy of Education just to mention a few, Ambassador Aminu had served Nigeria in different capacities before becoming the country's Ambassador to the United States.

He was Clinical Assistant in Medicine (Middlesex Hospital in UK) Clinical Research Fellow, (London Hospital Medical College), Consultant Physician and Senior Lecturer University of Ibadan Medical School, visiting Professor of Medicine Howard University College of Medicine, Washington DC and Vice Chancellor (President) University of Maiduguri in Nigeria. Between 1975-1979 he served as Executive Secretary National Universities Commission a position that made him responsible for the planning and development of universities and higher education in Nigeria.

A former Minister of Education (1985-89) and later Petroleum and Mineral Resources (1989-92) Ambassador Aminu was a foundation member Board of Trustees, People Democratic Party (PDP) Nigeria's ruling political party.
