Obasanjo Seeks Second Term
Nigeria's President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo today in Abuja formally
declared his intention to contest the 2003 election for a second term in
office.
In making the declaration, President Obasanjo enumerated the various
achievements of his administration which include the improved management of
the oil and gas sector; noticeable increase in foreign investment; marked
improvement in conditions of service of public sector employees; significant
increase in business activities and profits; vigorous investment in
infrastructures such as roads, energy and water supply with resultant
improvement in the living standards of the people, improved national image,
independence of the judiciary as exemplified in the recent Supreme Court
judgement; and the war on corruption.
In practical terms, the President acknowledged that there are more cars
now plying Nigerian roads, increased commercial activities at the ports,
increased employment opportunities and improved communication facilities
compared to the situation three years ago.
While accepting that much still needs to be done, Chief Obasanjo
rededicated himself to the promotion of the material well-being of all
Nigerians and called for a new orientation. He promised to abide by the
decision of the electorate.
